UP Rural HS Student wins Whiz of the South 2009
March 4, 2009, Wednesday posted by System AdministratorChristian Dolph Guerzon from the University of the Philippines Rural High School garnered the highest number of points in the Final Round to win this year's Whiz of the South on February 21 at the De La Salle Canlubang Auditorium.
DLSC Integrated School student Paul Buenvenida and another UP Rural HS student John Carlo Velandres placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. This year's Whiz of the South was a close contest between the top three winners as they were just separated by just two points (Guerzon - 34, Buenvenida - 32, Velandres - 30) after the final question.
This year's contest started with 15 students from 12 participating schools namely: Casa Del Ni&ntido Science High School, Canossa Academy - Calamba, Caritas Don Bosco School, De La Salle Canlubang, Holy Rosary College, Laguna Belair School, Los Baños National High School, San Lorenzo School, Science and Technology School of Los Baños, Sta. Cecilla Catholic School, St. Vincent College of Laguna and UP Rural High School.
After 3 elimination rounds, 8 students went on to participate in the Final Round. The other finalists included Johnel Bacani and Michael Lontoc of Los Baños National High School, Michelle Vilanueva of DLSC IS, John Genciana of San Lorenzo School Joseph Cantoria of Casa Del Niño Science High School.
The top three winners received trophies and cash prizes from the Rotary Club of Laguna Technopark, DLSC's partner in the Whiz of the South Contest. Mr. Alecei Carlson Lee of UP Rural HS, received the school trophy and cash prize for winning the top spot. By winning this year's Whiz of the South, Guerzon also received a full scholarship grant to any course he chooses to take at DLSC.
Now on its 4th year, the Whiz of the South contest is a partnership between DLSC and the Rotary Club of Laguna Technopark, giving private and public school students an opportunity to compete against other and have the opportunity to receive a full scholarship grant at DLSC.
Rotary Club of Laguna Technopark President Mr. Gerry Mercado, DLSC College Vice Dean and School of IT and Computing Director Mrs. Lissa Magpantay and former DLSC Executive Vice President Dr. Arnulfo Azcarraga were also present for this year's Whiz of the South.
