CompSci Junior Tops Pautakan '09
September 11, 2009, Friday posted by System AdministratorWhen he was a freshman, Cedric Viguilla, a CompSci student of ours, competed with two teammates on our first shot at the Pautakan Quiz Contest, held annually in De La Salle Lipa. Our all freshman team placed 8th out of 25 colleges; I believe almost all of their competition being seniors.
When he was a sophomore, our three all sophomore team, which still included Ced, placed 5th out of 25 colleges on our second year at Pautakan.
This year, as a junior, the 10th Annual Pautakan, held Feb. 13, 2009, was changed to an individual competition. I had to disappoint the excited team, although I was confident that Cedric could place on top even alone; I would have only been surprised if he didn't place on top.
Cedric made an early lead, getting around half of the first questions in the Easy Round all correct. He led by getting 12 out of 15 correct that round, while his closest opponent got only 9 out of 15.
In the Average Round, Cedric got 7 out of 15 questions right, while only one other competitor got more, 8 out of 15, but even so, Cedric was ahead by 4 points from the second placer.
During the break, we thought that the Difficult Round could shake rankings up, as from 3 and 5 points, questions would now be 7 points each. But after the first difficult question was asked, it was only Cedric who got the right answer, and the audience was obviously impressed. Ced would only pull away in the Difficult Round, getting more right answers in the Difficult Round than any of his competitors, assuring him of the Championship way before the final question. The competition ended with Cedric Viguilla, representing De La Salle Canlubang, getting 106 points, while second placer Alitagtag College, whose representatives were champions when they beat Cedric's team when Ced was still a freshman, garnered only 89 points, and Batangas State University, whose representatives were champions when they beat Ced's team while they were only sophomores, this time got only 88 points.
Cedric Viguilla, also current president of the student council, is a product of De La Salle Canlubang's system, and we can all take pride in this championship!
Animo La Salle! Go Canlubangers!
